Job Description

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE - What Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Experience are Needed to Perform the Job?

This job requires the Incumbent to pass an aptitude test in order to gain a basic understanding of the following unit operations: materials handling, polymerization, extraction, drying, distillation, evaporation, filtration and heat exchange. Because of the variety of equipment and functions in the P&R Area this operator must be safety conscious, responsible and dependable.

1. The job requires the skill and ability to keep careful process records.
2. The ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing is a prerequisite for good departmental interfacing.
3. It also requires the capability for physical effort in the handling of large/heavy containers.
4. The operator must be trained in the handling of corrosive materials and pressurized systems.
5. Will participate in current training programs including NUS Training Modules.

The average operator would take 18 to 24 months to become proficient in most functions in the P&R Area. P&R operators must be capable of performing the job duties in all the P&R Areas and will rotate from department to department on a shift to shift basis in order to keep current on all process, technical and engineering changes.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES - Four to Eight Brief Statements Indicating hat is Done (Action). How it is Done (Method or Means) and Why (End result). List in Order of Importance. (Use Additional Sheet of Paper if Necessary).

RECOVERY AREA

1. Operates, attends and regularly checks the recovery process equipment and ensures that T.J.A., S.M.I. and current operating instructions are being followed.
2. Starts up and shuts down equipment as instructed.
3. Knows, understands and conforms to Plant and Area Safety Rules, and reports all Incident/Near Miss activities.
4. Carries out process measurements and adjustments as necessary and records data as instructed. Samples process for lab as required.
5. Performs quantitative analysis of recovery process streams for proper treatment and refining of caprolactam.
6. Ensures all equipment is functioning correctly and issues shop orders to his Chief as necessary.

P&R OPERATOR - KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE (cont'd)

7. Maintains a log book for the unit noting all unusual incidents.
8. Performs housekeeping duties in assigned area.
9. Could be a member of the Plant Emergency Response Team.
10. Must be able to operate recovery control panel and D.C.S. system.

DIRECT POLYMERIZATION AND DIRECT CHIP COMPOUNDING
1. Operates, attends and regularly checks the direct process equipment and ensures that T.J.A.'s, S.M.I.'s and current operating instructions are being followed.
2. Starts up and shuts down equipment as instructed.
3. Knows, understands and conforms to plant and area safety rules, report incident and near miss incidents.
4. Carries out process measurements and adjustments as necessary and records data as instructed.
5. Samples various process streams and forwards samples to the Chemical Laboratory for analysis.
6. Ensures a supply of various chemical additives used in the process.
7. Ensures all equipment is functioning correctly and issues shop orders to his Chief as necessary.
8. Performs housekeeping duties in assigned areas.
9. May be a member of the Plant Emergency Response Team.
10. Must be able to operate direct unit control panel & D.C.S. in the Control Room plus the chip compounding control panels on 4th floor.
11. Responsible for recording area waste.
12. Maintains a log book for the unit noting all unusual incidents.

INDIRECT POLYMERIZATION AREA/SPECIALTY AREA
1. Operates, attends and regularly checks the indirect process equipment and ensures that T.J.A.', S.M.I.'s and current operating instructions are being followed.
2. Starts up and shuts down equipment as instructed.
3. Knows, understands and conforms to plant area safety rules, reports incident and near miss incidents..
4. Carries out process measurements and adjustments as necessary and records data as instructed.
5. Samples various process streams and forwards samples to the Chemical Laboratory for analysis.
6. Ensures a supply of the various chemical additives used in the process.
7. Receives and unloads caprolactam from tank trucks and rail tank cars.
8. Requires good physical condition to prepare boxes for storing product.
9. Ensures that the scheduled quantity of chip is supplied to the Spinning silos.
10. Ensures all equipment is functioning properly and issues Shop Orders to his Chief, as necessary.
11. Performs housekeeping duties in assigned areas.
12. May be a member of the Plant Emergency Response Team.
13. Maintains a log book for the unit noting all unusual incidents.
14. Responsible for recording area waste.
15. Must be able to operate the indirect unit & Specialty area D.C.S. system in the Control Room.

CHEMICALS OPERATOR - PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES (cont'd)

CONTROL ROOM AREA
1. Operates all control panels and D.C.S. system for all areas that make up the P&R Area.
2. Knows, understands and conforms to all Plant and Area safety rules, reports incidents and near miss incidents.
3. Coordinates the activities of all P&R operators through effective communication.
4. Starts up and shuts down equipment as requested.
5. Carries out process measurements and adjustments as necessary and records data as instructed.
6. Tabulates and follows up on Chemical Laboratory analysis.
7. Responsible for reporting raw materials consumed and chip transferred to Spinning or inventory.
8. Responsible for compiling area waste.
9. Maintains a logbook for the area noting all unusual incidents.
10. Maintains Control Room housekeeping so area is presentable.

SAFETY
1. Participates in Company housekeeping programs and reports to management the absence of or defect in any equipment or protective devices.
2. Partakes in training programs for the aspects of each job, including safety and loss prevention.
3. Works in a manner that ensures the safety and protection of oneself, fellow employees and the Company.
4. Familiarizes oneself with all emergency procedures.
5. Reports unsafe conditions or acts promptly to management.

PROBLEM SOLVING
For the most part requires the routine application of experience and T.J.A.'s in effect in the area. However, in the cases of power failure or other emergency conditions the operator must be able to take unsupervised corrective action to prevent damage to personnel or equipment. The operator must be able to act calmly and think rationally when under stress, should be highly motivated and eager to learn.

ACCOUNTABILITY
Carries accountability for the safe, continuous and efficient operation of the facilities and equipment in the assigned areas. Actions are subject to practices and procedures established by supervision and management policies. Reports all incidents so they can be recorded and followed up with corrective actions.
