SUMMARY
The Services Navigator will provide screening and brief assessment for children, youth, and families experiencing involvement with Nigig Nibi-Ki-win Gamik Society. Based on information ascertained in the initial intake and assessment of safety, the Services Navigator will then make referrals to the appropriate services, including internal and external resources not limited to applicable programming, Child Well-being, Prevention and Family Wellness services, as well as other departments of Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation’s organization umbrella (herein AOPFN) and external service providers, as required to best fit the needs of the client(s).
The Services Navigator will be responsible for maintaining collaborative relationships with community partners and culturally relevant services by organizing information sharing opportunities such as lunch and learns, learning circles, and agency visits. Engages with healing lodges, treatment centres, group homes, and wellness programs to learn about their service offerings, cultural practices, and approaches to care. Develops and maintains a living resource lists and shares this information with the team to support strengths based, trauma informed, and culturally grounded service planning that honours self determination, safety, and holistic wellbeing.
The Services Navigator will monitor the progress of the plan of care through structured data collection, evidence informed review of service progress, and continuous documentation in the case management system, ensuring that each plan remains current, responsive, and outcome focused. The Services Navigator will also monitor this through case consultations and follow-up sessions and will engage and build relationships with other resources as required. This form of advocacy will not only provide education about traditional practices to service providers but also support education to clients on the culturally specific practices being employed with that provider.
When working through Nigig Gamik’s data system, the Services Navigator ensures client information is stored with respect and integrity and client stories are honoured through their time with the organization. The position often works in conjunction with the Data Enhancement Coordinator to determine effective tools and protocols to assist in the navigation of services.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Navigation of Client-Orientated Services:
• Assists clients after initial intake process.
• Provides education on Nigig Nibi Ki-win and Nigig Gamik as may be necessary to clients, including processes.
• Provides referrals to appropriate service areas and liaises with referred department managers and supervisors, recommending appropriate/available services based on information gathered at intake and through follow-up directly with clients.
• Provides all external referrals to the managers, supervisors, and frontline staff for any services needed outside of Nigig Gamik.
• Monitors and supports clients while waitlisted for service.
• Provides warm hand-off to departments/Nigig staff, promoting relationality within Nigig.
• Works with clients and their families, creating a strategy for service that will lead to the best quality of support available.
• Assists in fostering understanding for clients and families of the various systems they may be engaged with in accessing appropriate services according to their needs, which may be internal or external.
2. Collaborative Practice:
• Understands Nigig Nibi Ki-win and is consistently up to date on service delivery principles and protocols of and Nigig Gamik.
• Participates in case management meetings with Nigig’s service managers.
• Utilizes and consults with other inter-agency departments in health care and social services as required.
• Provides education and awareness on Nigig Nibi Ki-win Gamik and promotes its services.
• Consistently available to clients at various points of service, as well as may be necessary in the navigation of their service supports.
• Serves as an advocate for clients (re: access to services, enhancing cultural sensitivity and respect).
• Strengthens existing pathways to access holistic and culturally appropriate services.
3. Community & Resource Engagement:
• Develops and maintains a living resource lists and shares this information with the team to support strengths-based, trauma-informed, and culturally grounded service planning that honours self-determination, safety, and holistic wellbeing.
• Liaises and networks with community and health services for the integration of new and existing services.
• Develops strong and lasting professional relationships with service networks local to community, within territory, and wherever clients may reside and require service support.
• Builds relationships with both Indigenous and non-Indigenous service agencies as needed.
• Travel to speak and engage with service provides, providing education of Nigig Nibi ki-win, Nigig Gamik and the community supported in this work.
• Initiates, builds and promotes community awareness of all relevant resources, either in conjunction with other service areas within Nigig or independently.
4. Administrative:
• Documents accurately and as necessary given service policy and outlined requirements, maintaining privacy and confidentiality.
• Develops and implements tools to ensure evidence-based reporting.
• Completes all administrative reporting requirements according to policy and the funding agent’s mandate.
• Create and update client files, managing access points.
• Create enrollment forms to assign clients to staff member caseloads, and other forms as may be necessary in the performance of the work.
• Manage and maintain the Client Master List.
• Maintains up-to-date Members List.
• Manage and maintain excel spreadsheets for tracking purposes.
5. Quality Improvement:
• Participates in cultural awareness and cultural sensitivity training.
• Participates in the development and updating of policies and procedures.
• Monitors service times.
• Creates forms and other documents required for reporting
• Promotes a positive and collaborative workplace and workflow.
• Supports organizational quality improvement by monitoring service delivery trends, identifying systemic barriers, and contributing to strategies that enhance access, coordination, and cultural safety.
• Conducts routine quality checks such as documentation audits, workflow reviews, and Plan of Care monitoring to ensure compliance with Nigig Gamik standards and best practices.
• Uses data from the case management system to track progress, measure outcomes, and support continuous improvement in service navigation and client support.
• Recommends updates to procedures, tools, and resources to enhance efficiency, consistency, and client experience.
• Engages in ongoing professional development to strengthen competencies related to trauma informed care, Indigenous approaches, case management, and community collaboration.
6. Risk Management:
• Engages in ongoing reflection, learning, and supervision to strengthen risk awareness, reduce potential harm, and support culturally safe service delivery.
• Upholds integrity in documentation and communication to ensure risks are clearly understood, monitored, and addressed across the service team.
• Recognizes when situations may require enhanced supports, referrals, or consultation, and activates culturally appropriate responses in accordance with Nigig Gamik policies and community practices.
• Promotes community safety and wellness by identifying risks through a holistic lens that considers physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual wellbeing.
7. Other:
• Performs other related duties as may be required by the Director of Service Delivery and/or Nigig Nibi Ki-win Gamik Society.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work involves contact with clients, service providers, emergency services workers, and external child welfare agencies; work is subject to deadlines and interruptions. Work involves handling and dealing with issues of a very sensitive and confidential nature. Due to the sensitive nature of all contact with clients (in person or via technology) the Services Navigator is required to keep all information confidential. The Services Navigator positions requires you to sit and stand for various periods of time. The Services Navigator position involves travel and flexible scheduling.
EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS
1. Basic Requirements:
• Bachelor of Social Work, or relevant and equivalent combination of post-secondary education in social, human and/or health services-related fields, with 2-5 years of working experience. Working directly with First Nation communities, and Algonquins of Pikwakanagan specifically, would be considered an asset.
• Demonstrated understanding of Nigig Nibi Ki-win, and services offered by Nigig Gamik and other local service providers within traditional territory.
• Ability to understand what constitutes a risk to safety under Nigig Nibi Ki-win.
• Ability to understand the importance of wholistic, family-led plans of care.
• A demonstrated expert-level knowledge of applicable local resources related to this area of work.
• Minimum 2 years administrative experience using various case management systems, as well as Microsoft Suite of programs.
2. Rated Requirements:
Knowledge:
• Child welfare case management.
• Knowledge, experience and understanding of the culture, history of First Nation populations, specifically the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation.
• Indigenous knowledge, in particular, knowledge of Algonquin child and family values, traditions and practices.
• Knowledge of traditional healing practices.
• In depth knowledge of local, regional, and provincial Indigenous and non-Indigenous services.
• Child Welfare legislation, mandates, standards of practice, policies, and procedures such as the Child, Youth and Family Services Act, 2017, Bill C-92, Jordan’s Principle, Customary Care etc.
• Customary Care.

3. Conditions of Employment:
• Proof of qualifications.
• Provide a clear Criminal Reference Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening.
• CPR and First Aid Certification; to be completed accordingly.
• Proof of a class "G" driver's license; clear driver's abstract and access to a dependable vehicle. This position requires traveling.
• Ability to travel and work flexible hours as may be required from time to time.
