SUMMARY
The Child Well-being Supervisor will work collaboratively work with the Child Well-Being Manager to schedule and implement program and service delivery and the training of all Nigig-Nibi-Ki-Win Gamik child well-being staff involved in this delivery in order to successfully implement the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation’s child wellbeing law, Nigig-Nibi-ki-win, through its agency, Nigig-Nibi-ki-win Gamik.
The Child Well-being Supervisor will work collaboratively with the Child Well-being Manager to successfully onboard, train and supervise staff within the department with respect to the delivery of programs and services either required or made available to Algonquin children, youth and families.
The Supervisor may interactions with other child well-being agencies outside of Nigig Nibi Ki-win’s jurisdiction, levels of governments or government agencies, as well as liaise with other agencies as may be required in the delivery of services to children outside of Algonquin territory.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Supervision and Training
• Under the guidance of the Child Well-being Manager, supervises and assists with training all staff engaged in the exercise of jurisdiction under the law and the provision of services to children and families.
• Under the guidance of the Child Well-being Manager, supervises and assists with ensuring all staff adhere to procedures and policies related to program operations and delivery of services.
• Provides regular supervision to child well-being workers to support trauma-informed, and culturally-grounded service delivery.
• Supports staff to critically reflect on decision making, power, bias, and professional responsibility.
• Works to identify individual and team learning needs and supports access to relevant training and professional development.
• Provides coaching and mentoring to strengthen practical skills, confidence, and cultural safety.
• Supports staff through complex cases, secondary trauma, and workplace stress, promoting wellness and sustainability.
• Participates in onboarding, orientation, and mentoring of new staff.
• Encourages shared learning through team discussions, case reviews, and file conversations.
2. Program Development
• Assists the CWB Manager in the development of programs for the delivery of services through Nigig Nibi Ki-win.
• Assists also in the development of processes, systems, and resources to deliver all services contemplated under the law (e.g., wrap-around care).
• Contributes frontline perspectives to the development of child well-being programs.
• Works to identify emerging needs, service gaps, and barriers based on staff experiences and casework trends.
• Collaborates with the Manager to ensure program models align with:
• Child safety and well-being standards
• Prevention focused and family centered approaches.
• Supports staff to implement new or evolving changes program expectations, tools, and service pathways.
• Participates in pilot projects, practice changes, and program materials from a best practices lens.
• Supports continuous improvement by sharing lessons learned from frontline work and quality reviews.
3. On-Call
• Must be available to respond to emergencies or urgent situations outside of regular working hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
• Will respond promptly when contacted during an on-call shift.
• Are capable of diagnosing problems remotely or providing initial troubleshooting assistance over the phone or through email/text.
• May be required to physically report to a location to address emergencies that cannot be resolved remotely or by staff, such as emergency situations.
• Must maintain clear communication channels with colleagues, supervisors, and clients to ensure that they are informed about the status of ongoing issues and any actions taken to resolve them.
• Will document all incidents, including the nature of the problem, actions taken to resolve it, and any follow-up steps required if responding to a call in place of a staff, and/or ensure documentation is completed by the staff on-call.
• Will be responsible for following up with staff to ensure that any issues have been fully resolved and that any necessary preventative measures have been implemented.
4. Collaborative Practice
• Works collaboratively with child well-being workers to support safe and practices grounded in Algonquin culture.
• Maintains strong, respectful working relationships with the Child Well-being Manager, recognizing shared accountability for outcomes.
• Engages families, caregivers, and community supports as partners in decision-making and service planning.
• In conjunction with the Manager, facilitates collaboration across internal programs and external service providers to support children and youth who are members of AOPFN or affiliated with Nigig Nibi Ki-win.
• Participates in case planning meetings, family circles, healing circles, and grandparent’s tribunals as may be required.
• Fosters a team environment grounded in mutual respect, open communication and shared learning.
5. Administrative
• Completes and oversees required supervisory documentation, including supervision records, approvals, and reviews.
• Ensures Child Well-being files are complete, timely, and maintained in accordance with Nigig Nibi Ki-win, policy, and organizational standards.
• Supports staff with administrative requirements related to case management, documentation, and reporting.
• Monitors staff workloads and caseloads and communicates capacity concerns to the Child Well-being Manager.
• Participates in scheduling, leave planning, and coverage to support service continuity.
• Supports accurate data entry and reporting to meet internal and external accountability requirements.
6. Quality Management
• Participates in team, supervisory, and organizational meetings as required.
• Participates in cultural awareness and cultural sensitivity training.
• Contribute to policy, procedure, and program development by brining forward frontline practice perspectives.
• Provides reflective supervision to support consistent, high quality child wellbeing practices.
• Reviews Child Well-being files to ensure:
Service delivery aligns with Nigig Nibi Ki-win and organizational standards
Decisions are well-documented, defensible, and culturally responsive.
• Works to identify service delivery strengths, gaps and trends, and shares observations with the Child Well-being Manager for system-level improvement.
• Supports staff to integrate policy, service model, and cultural teachings into day-to-day work.
• Participates in audits, file reviews, and quality improvement processes.
• Promotes continuous learning and improvement through coaching, feedback, and professional development.
7. Risk Management
• Provides immediate support and guidance on complex, high risk, or crisis situations.
• Ensures risk assessments, safety plans, and intervention strategies are completed appropriately and revisited as needed.
• Supports staff in balancing child safety, family well-being, and cultural considerations.
• Escalates significant risks, critical incidents, or service delivery concerns to the Child Well-being Manager in a timely manner.
• Participates in critical incident reviews and posts incident debriefs.
• Supports staff well-being and trauma awareness when managing high risk work.
• Ensures the risk is understood and managed collectively rather than individually.
8. Other
• Support a workplace culture grounded in respect, accountability, and relationship-based support.
• Carry out additional duties as assigned that are consistent with the scope and intent of the Supervisor role.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Due to the sensitive nature of personal information and potential interaction with individuals to whom services are being delivered, the Child Well-being Supervisor is required to keep all information confidential. The Child Well-being Supervisor position requires you to sit and stand for various periods of time. This position requires interaction with highly sensitive information regarding safety of children. The Child Well-being Supervisor position involves travel. The Child Well-being Supervisor position involves flexibility of schedule, which include on-call expectations.
EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:
1. Basic Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree in Social Work.
• Minimum of three (3) years direct experience working with youth and families in a social service or other related health setting. A minimum of one (1) year with supervisory experience would be considered an asset.
• Experience working with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis (FNIM) people in a community-based setting would be considered an asset.
2. Rated Requirements:
Knowledge
• Indigenous knowledge, in particular, knowledge of Algonquin child and family values, traditions, and practices.
• Knowledge of traditional healing practices.
• In-depth knowledge of local, regional, and provincial Indigenous and non-Indigenous services.
• In-depth knowledge of Child Welfare legislation, mandates, standards of practice, policies, and procedures such as the Child, Youth and Family Services Act, 2017, Bill C-92, Jordan’s Principle, PMSS, Customary Care, etc.
Abilities
• Coordination and planning of individualized extended wrap-around care.
• Develop training material for and train staff in the delivery of programs and services.
• Develop and structure programs and services that can be operationalized and delivered effectively and that remain grounded in the culture, tradition, and practices of the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation.
• Develop and maintain professional networks for extension of care.
• Proficiency in the use of computers and various software programs.
